design, y.c.
Linda Thomas, ASID

Beginning last year and continuing for a five-year term, design y.c. is host to the national conference for ASID.   This format is of concern to members who enjoyed having the national conference held at various locations across the country.  Last year the concern of members was that there was not significant ASID presence at the event.  This year efforts were made to that end.  Meaningful CEU's were offered throughout the course of the conference.  I attended three and found them all of merit.  One CEU, "Living with Antiques", provided a panel discussion with slides from five well-known antique experts.  Leigh Keno, from the PBS show Antiques Roadshow, as one of the panelists.  I had occasion to meet him and invite he and his brother, Leslie, to Michigan.  Next year the Merchandise Mart Properties will take over the entire operation, so expect major changes!

ASID Celebration, the National award presentation, was held on the evening preceding the opening of design.y.c.  Michigan Chapter's own Thom Grabowski, FASID participated in the parade of Fellows.  Thom, as usual, looked his dapper best! The Michigan Chapter is also proud to announce that Industry Partner, Doug Parker of Steelcase, was made an Honorary Fellow for his significant contribution to the Society.  Doug has served at national in various capacities over the years.  He was instrumental in getting Steelcase to fund speakers at national meetings and has served both on the Industry Partner Council and on the National Board.  Most recently, through Doug's efforts, Steelcase has provided the new systems furniture for ASID National Headquarters offices in Washington.  The Michigan Chapter applauds Doug Parker!

Trends in
Design '99

Trends in Design Student Day October 20, 1999 was attended by students from Adrian College Center for Creative Studies, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Lansing Community College, Michigan State, Wayne State, Western Michigan and Baker College.  Students went away with a great deal of information and "goodies" from the reps.

The students participated in a round table discussion with a professional who shared their views on aspect of Interior Design.  The students were able to hear four different speakers within the time allotted.  Though this format was more intimate, the hall was again filled to overflowing as were the tables.  The students preferred the more intimate setting the roundtables provided for questions, but would have preferred to choose their 2nd, 3rd and 4th speakers.  Surveys were given to the students to further refine the process.  The student meeting had all boards from attending universities introduced faculty advisors acknowledged. Each university told of upcoming events.  Universities were invited to participate this summer in the ASID/Detroit Historical Society Showhouse. A presentation regarding CIDR was given by Marilyn Whitney. Jeanne Wood spoke regarding IIDA's destiny program to become a professional and P. K. Fields spoke regarding ASID's STEP program.

A special thank you to Heather Hochstetter, Diane Adler, Bonnie Barden, Linda Thomas and Tammy Cobaugh for making this a resounding success for all the attendees.
